In a nutshell: The NHS is missing out on annual efficiency savings worth up to £2bn by failing to embrace remote monitoring and care, according to a report shared with HSJ. Telehealth can reduce demand for face-to-face services and expensive acute care but there is currently “no strategic drive for telehealth at scale” in the NHS, according to the Healthcare Without Walls report by think tank 2020health.

In a nutshell: A new telehealth system has been created in Scotland’s Western Isles that could mean quicker diagnosis and treatment for stroke victims. A video link has been set up between the Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway and Aberdeen Royal Infirmary (ARI). With this new system, CT scans can be sent for analysis by ARI consultants, who can also talk to accident and emergency staff or patients themselves. For some patients this system could mean early administration of a clot-busting drug.
