In a nutshell: A large-scale telestroke service has gone live across Lancashire and Cumbria, allowing consultants to assess patients for thrombolysis treatment by video-link. Fifteen consultants have been given a laptop in their own home that links to a specially designed ‘telecart’ positioned at the patient’s bedside in one of the eight hospitals in the stroke network.

In a nutshell: A new service which could give stroke patients a better chance of recovery is being introduced at Furness General Hospital. People admitted to the hospital suffering from an acute stroke will now have access to a thrombolysis service in the emergency department. The University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Trust, which runs FGH, is also working with the Cardiac and Stroke Network in Cumbria to develop an out-of-hours Telestroke service.

In a nutshell: A new telehealth system has been created in Scotland’s Western Isles that could mean quicker diagnosis and treatment for stroke victims. A video link has been set up between the Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway and Aberdeen Royal Infirmary (ARI). With this new system, CT scans can be sent for analysis by ARI consultants, who can also talk to accident and emergency staff or patients themselves. For some patients this system could mean early administration of a clot-busting drug.
