In a nutshell: This prospective cohort study examines the association between migraine and migraine aura status and the risk of haemorrhagic stroke. The study concludes that migraine with aura might, in addition to ischaemic events, also be a risk factor for haemorrhagic stroke. However, further confirmation of these observations is needed.

In a nutshell: This population-based cohort study aims to estimate whether migraine in mid-life is associated with mortality from cardiovascular disease, other causes, and all causes. The study concludes that migraine with aura is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular and all cause mortality in men and women. The risk of mortality from coronary heart disease and stroke mortality is modestly increased in people with migraine, particularly those with aura.

Severe migraine sufferers ‘twice as likely to have a stroke’

In a nutshell: A new study published in the BMJ states that people who suffer from severe migraines with aura are twice as likely to have a stroke. The study also found that this risk was magnified in women, in those aged less than 45, in smokers, and in women who used oral contraceptives.

In a nutshell: Migraines substantially raise the risk of a stroke during pregnancy, a US study suggests. However, the British Medical Journal study stressed the overall risk remained low. It also linked the headaches to a raised risk of heart disease, blood clots and high blood pressure. The researchers suspect migraine puts extra stress on the body when it is already struggling with increased blood volume and heart rate.
