In a nutshell: A new drug has been found to reduce the risk of stroke among patients who have atrial fibrillation. A randomised trial of 5,600 AF patients found that the drug apixaban reduced their chance of suffering a stroke by 3.6 per cent a year. By contrast, aspirin only reduced their risk by 1.6 per cent a year.

Warfarin reduces the risk of stroke by 50-70%, but an estimated 46% of patients who would benefit from anticoagulants are not receiving them.
